November Vendor Spotlight: Skrunchies.mtl

We're Staci and Kelsey a cousin duo born and raised in Montreal. We both love getting creative and find ourselves laughing more than we talk.

What inspired you to start a business? We are both extremely creative and one weekend I (Kelsey) wanted to try and make some scrunchies that would fit in my hair. It’s so thick that I was wasting money buying elastics and scrunchies that would just break on me or wouldn’t hold it properly. We posted on our personal social media and the rest is history.

How did you come up with your business name? S for Staci, K for Kelsey. Skrunchies.mtl is our handle but our business name is actually Accessoires SK.

What is your favorite thing that you make and why? Our zipper scrunchie is our favorite - you can put so many fun things in it. I personally love it for travel.

Tell us about the progress you've made since you first started Our first ever scrunchy was half machine-sewed and half glued! We had NO idea how to sew, use a machine, or even anything about different fabrics. Now we have 6 machines, can sew so many different things and we can talk about fabric all day. We've also grown such a fun-loving community that we’re so proud of.

Describe your creative process Impulsive! We both love to get ideas and just run with them.

What is the best part of being an entrepreneur? Being able to do what we'd like and not have anyone tell us what our limits are.

What is your favorite memory of your business? Creating custom scrunchies for a variety of different things. The most meaningful was to create scrunchies for someone who passed away.

Do you handmake your accessories? We handmake every single scrunchie that leaves our studio. We do, however, curate other accessories from vendors we now have strong partnerships with.

What is your favorite part of owning a small business? Meeting other business owners and meeting our clients.

What is the hardest part of running your own business? It’s very time-consuming and so much goes on behind the scenes that people don’t really know about.

What are your business goals for the future?

Continue building our SK community and empowering others to do the same.
