Meet the Maker Month: Kelly A Bernard

Hello, I'm Kelly a non-binary ceramic maker who is slightly obsessed with cats and dinosaurs. I do not make your average ceramics, I like to add my childlike playful flare to it. I greatly enjoy working in ceramics and I find that shows in the vast array of weird creations I've made so far.

Are you a cat person? No, I'm an animal person. I love all animals. Cats just have that sassiness about them I can't help but love and show off.

Do you have pets? Of course! I have my absolutely stunning KC (Kelly’s cat) baby and the little evil monster Skeletor. Both are cats and yes are definitely muses to some of my work.

What's your favorite part of being a maker? Honestly seeing how happy or excited people get totally makes my day. I know I'm always super excited about my own works but seeing others feel the same just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside

What does being a Maker mean to you? I've always been making crafts or little projects as a kid, it was just something I've always liked doing. Now as a maker being able to make someone's day by doing something I greatly enjoy is a win-win, I couldn't ask for more.

What motivates you to create? I just love making, anything from baking to sewing, painting to printmaking, and more. To me, it has always been enjoyable so I don't usually need motivation

How has the pandemic impacted your creativity? I now work in a spare room in my apartment and have no one to break my work other than myself or my cats. It might be lonely at times and I sure wish I could lean on a pal for help but damn, I love fewer broken pieces. I find the pandemic made me more open to creating on a more broad spectrum rather than just ceramics which has been fun and interesting.

What is your dream project? One day I'd really like to make a very large-scale cat, like a gorilla-sized cat! What would I do with it? Where would I store it? Who knows, it would just be super cool

Do you accept commissions? I do, they can be very fun and enjoyable. But sometimes they're stressful as heck. That being said I still do them because it’s always fun to try new things and see where it takes you.

What type of art do you like to consume? I consume a lot of it from watching anime, live music, going to galleries, checking out drag shows. I am just always submerged in art in all aspects of my life.

What are your long-term goals? Make art until I die, also pet all the kitties I can along the way

What inspires you? I am forever inspired by life there's always something going on, interesting people, cute pets, stupid curfews just to name a few

What initially drew you to your craft? It was a coincidence really, I was in an art program and I really loved sculpture. I have taken all the classes and in one of the classes we experimented with clay and I knew it was what I wanted and what I was looking for.

What story do you want to tell with your work? I feel I'm never really 100% sure of the story until it’s done. Sometimes I start with one idea in mind and somewhere along the line, we took an unexpected left turn.

Why are humans creative? More than just humans are creative, it’s intuitive
